Birthday boy Slingsby wins third Laser World Championship 06/09/2010

Congratulations to Tom Slingsby who just won his 3rd Laser Standard Senior World Championship with a convincing 36 point lead! Fellow ASDS sailor Ashley Brunning finished in 18th after having a strong and consistent event (read his blog here). After a bit of bad luck in the qualifiers James Burman, Ryan Palk and Tom Burton didnt quite make it to the gold fleet but showed great mental strength by pulling it together to finish strongly in silver fleet (58th, 66th and 71st respectively).

AST have a final media report here

and full regatta results can be found here

Now the pressure is on for all our masters sailors to pull together and replicate our Senior sailors success, next week in the Laser Standard Masters World Championships in Hayling Island. Good luck to all our Masters!

Cubes for non-NSW residents? 05/09/2010

Your committee has unanimously decided to put a motion at the AGM at the Coasts in October to allow all competitors, including non-NSW residents, at future State and State Masters regattas to be eligible for cubes.

The Victorians have long allowed it, as have the Kiwis, and the executive committee simply feels it's illogical to allow someone to enter an event but not let them win the prize. It wouldn't be countenanced in athletics, or tennis, or swimming so why should NSW Laser sailors be so provincial and insecure?

The matter will be voted on by the Association members at the AGM, to be held on the Sunday morning at the Coasts at South Lake Macquarie SC at Sunshine. If you've got a strong opinion either way come along and make yourself heard before the vote is taken. If you can't make it to the AGM but would like your opinion to be taken into account just email one of the executive committee members -- you'll find the email addresses under Contact at the top of this page.

See you at Sunshine on October 16/17
